In the first of a series of patient testimonial articles, we recount the experience of Bernadette Leahy from Limerick who suffered with facial pain for a couple of years and was referred to Dr Conor Shields. Bernadette: I was attending an Orthodontist who was fantastic and he eventually guided me along the route, he knew Conor.
Interviewer: And so what was the treatment that Conor [gave you]?
Bernadette: I had to get a special shield made (you know) for night-time and it was to relax my jaw muscles. So this was great. So it totally relaxed [my jaw]. So when I wore that, the pain was relieved.
Interviewer: Yes
Bernadette: And he’d sort of calibrate the teeth to get a good fit then as well, a good bite. I had pain constantly, night, noon and morning, like for a couple of years before I came to Conor. So ‘twas a miracle that he actually sorted me out. From the moment I came, it was like, I felt ‘twas like you put a net under me, that I was minded, not alone that, but they know their stuff basically. And, yeah, it was amazing. They’re gentle and know their stuff and you’re safe, basically.
I got two implants. I got there and there, which was huge for me to get [that] done, because I was scared out of my mind. But because I trusted them so much and felt comfortable and felt … I just knew. I just knew they were excellent.
Interviewer: It’s made a big difference to your lifestyle now having that.
Bernadette: They gave me my life back. Honestly like, I have my life back. I couldn’t really put it into words. Do you know what I mean? You know, the way you go to somebody, say, “God they were great”, but there isn’t words, really for them outside there. Isn’t that amazing?
Interviewer: That is amazing.
Bernadette: So I’m a happy camper.
Interviewer: Good.

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)
The Shields brothers have years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a condition known as Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD) and have been members of the British Society for Occlusal Studies for over 10 years. TMD is a condition of the jaw which can cause facial, jaw and joint pain. It often relates to occlusal problems, which is where a person’s teeth don’t fit together very well. This can create problems not only for the teeth but also the gums, the temporomandibular joint and the muscles that control it. Clenching and grinding are often symptoms of the condition and treatment requires a specialised occlusal splint prescribed by a dental practitioner.
