It is often overlooked that orthodontic treatment has benefits that are more far reaching than cosmetic only. Failing to treat misaligned, widely spaced and protruding teeth can have implications on your dental and overall health, especially if left untreated for a long period. Here, we look at some of the complications that can occur if you fail to treat such problems and how orthodontic treatment can benefit your overall health and happiness.

Increased chance of tooth developing gum disease and tooth decay – When you have unnatural gaps in your teeth, there are deep crevices where bacteria and food particles can settle and become plaque and tartar both of which cause gum disease and tooth decay. After you undergo treatment to straighten your teeth, these unhealthy gaps no longer exist and your chances of developing gum disease and tooth decay are dramatically reduced. Gum disease has also been linked to high blood pressure and heart problems,; with this in mind, your tooth structure plays a big part in maintaining how your body functions.

Complications with your jaw – Your bite and your teeth have a close rapport and the upkeep of one influences the other. Misaligned teeth places stress on your jaw which will lead to temporomandubular joint problems. In resolving your jaw problems, your bite pattern will improve and your teeth will not become unevenly worn. Uneven jaw alignment also renders your teeth more susceptible to breaking and chipping, thus leading to infections.

– Orthodontic issues in children – Failing to correct protruding teeth in children can lead to sports injuries, as teeth are more exposed (especially since children are very high-contact when they are young and competing in certain sports!). Improper bite can also cause problems with chewing, leading to poor digestion very early on. It is essential that children’s bodies absorb nutrients correctly to allow for a healthy transition into adulthood.

– Improved confidence and self-esteem – This is more to do with the aesthetic side of things but in combination with improved health, your confidence will improve as a result of orthodontic treatment. Mind and body are equally important and both influence one another!
