The Dangers of Celebrities and Cosmetic Procedures

May 17, 2018 | Cosmetic Treatments

The rise in popularity of reality television has resulted in a new phenomenon; the desire to get the ‘celebrity look’. Reality TV stars like the Kardashians are influencing new trends regularly, not least of which is non-surgical cosmetic procedures. With celebrities promoting beauty enhancement procedures and their fans eager to follow their lead, certain cosmetic procedures have seen a rise in demand.

But not all is as straightforward as we are made to believe, nor are the results always what we are looking for. In what seems to be a rather unfavourable side effect, the high demand for non-surgical procedures has resulted in host of unqualified practitioners offering these services. Unsurprisingly then, what should be relatively simple, non-invasive procedures are often having effects that are far from desirable.

What Cosmetic Procedures are we Talking about?

Some of the more common non-surgical, cosmetic procedures include:

Anti-wrinkle Injections: Anti-wrinkle injections are generally a neurotoxin which blocks the action of some muscle receptors. When injected into certain areas of the face, Anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscles around the eyes (incl. the forehead e.g. frown lines) or mouth resulting in a reduction of laugh-lines or crow’s feet.

Dermal fillers: Dermal fillers are injectables that when administered correctly can plump up the skin and smooth out wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is the most commonly used dermal filler and it works by attracting and retaining water in the area where is has been injected.

Lip fillers: Lip fillers are similar to dermal fillers but they plump up the lips, making them look fuller.

What Can go Wrong?

In every cosmetic procedure, even one carried out by a qualified practitioner, there is always a risk of side effects. Some customers might be allergic to the filler used, the procedure could cause undue swelling or pain, or you might just not be happy with the results. A qualified practitioner will be able to minimise the risk of these problems occurring.

However, there are some very real risks when the procedure is performed by someone who is not fully qualified to carry it out. Anti-wrinkle injections must be injected in the right place and at the right dosage. Any mix-ups in these parameters could result in uneven muscle relaxation in the face. More serious conditions like nerve damage and paralysis can also be caused by incorrect administration of Anti-wrinkle injections.

Dermal and lip fillers, when injected incorrectly, can cause lumping in the area of the injection, migration of the filler to other parts of the face and even cell necrosis (cell death) and scarring.

How do you Avoid these Complications?

There is nothing wrong with wanting to improve our appearance, but it would be advisable to do your research first. Be cautious about where you get your procedure done and what your practitioner’s qualifications are.

Beware of practitioners who offer their services at rates much lower than that of well-known clinics. Be careful also of people practicing out of their homes. Reputed centres with qualified staff are your safest bet, so make sure to do your research well.
