Here at Shields, we offer a range of treatment options that are designed to suit different budgets and taste, encompassing braces that are made from a range of different material including metal appliances, clear plastic Invisalign aligner and ceramic braces.
What does treatment involve?
Orthodontist Dr O’Flynn will carry out an initial consultation with you so that you can talk about your treatment expectations and ask any questions you might have. A treatment plan and method will be drawn up and following this, the correct method of treatment can begin.
The make-up of ceramic braces is similar to that of traditional metal braces – the difference is that each of the brackets that are bonded to the front of each tooth is clear or tooth-coloured, making them a very discreet treatment option. You will need to attend an initial consultation so that your orthodontist here at Shields can asses whether ceramic braces are the way forward for you – this is based on the way your teeth overlap. The elastic bands that hold the arch wire (ligatures) are wither clear or white, adding to their discreet aesthetic.
Round-up of the benefits of ceramic braces:
- Comfortable – the hardware does not irritate the gums.
- High quality make-up – ceramic braces do not generally break or chip unless they are poorly maintained.
Ceramic braces can be used to treat misaligned teeth as well as overbites where the upper front teeth protrude too far forward over the lower front teeth and underbites where the lower teeth protrude over the upper teeth. They can also treat crossbites where a patient’s upper teeth bite inside the lower teeth
Traditional fixed metal braces can be used to treat complex orthodontic issues including misalignment of teeth. Metal braces are composed of brackets and archwires, essential hardware that helps to guide your teeth into a desired position. Certain braces include spring on the archwires between each brackets and these either push, pull open or close the gaps between each tooth.
Round-up of the benefits of metal braces:
- Long-standing treatment that has been around for over 100 years and that has continued to evolve over the years and is still used today.
- Versatile design – you can opt for coloured brackets – a particularly good incentive for young people who are anxious about having treatment.
Metal braces can be used to treat misalignment problems and can also fix crowding and bite issues such as underbite, overbite and cross bite issues.
